Array She’s locked out of her home and needs my help (before we can go in and do some activity I’m really looking forward to… what else, seriously, chess!).What is the big idea behind chivalry or expecting a man to do things that might seem unnatural to him?Yes, women probably find it charming because a few good men in their enthusiasm to please their bratty spoilt date do it. It’s charming because it’s rare and special. And gentlemen, beware of opening the door for her all the time. No woman is going to fall into a dead faint if you don’t open a door for her. (In fact, in these trying times, we’ll probably faint with surprise if you do.)Because, believe it or not, we can open our own doors.

The left-handed tilt and sensational accusations seem more like Poe or The Brothers Grimm” than an honest portrayal of current events and the goings on of our world.First off, I feel the newspapers are worse than the periodicals because they have been long trusted by the public to give us just the facts (shout out to Mr. Friday). True, a fact is a fact, but a fact can be couched with opinion and slant quickly changing a fact into a little truth within a big lie. These purveyors of poppycock give a story a certian tone in order for it to come across in a way that supports their cause, whatever that may be.In short, I suppose newspapers have devolved from the window through which we see the world into a filter through which the world is shown to us.

The next couple of songs were rockers, too, but Earle’s energy level didn’t seem to match the quality of his songwriting. ***After listening to a couple of songs by Mates of State, a nice indie pop band, I made the long trek across the park so I could get a good position for the Lucinda Williams show. They also illustrated why Williams is one of our finest songwriters.Williams, who’s originally from Louisiana, dedicated the fifth song of the set, “Crescent City,” That would be my idea of heaven on Earth.***As I ambled back across the park to meet my friends, I stopped to listen to a couple of songs from The Thievery Corporation. I thought the set was good, even the songs from the new album, which I don’t like as much as the band’s older albums.***As the sun began to set, John Prine started playing. He never stopped smiling. His coarse voice seemed to add texture of his songs, which are among the wittiest ever written.

Array-ne This guy seems to think that Israel will be destroyed because it didn’t wipe out Hezbollah. Last year, Tsh’a b’Av fell on August 14, the day Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza. I, nonetheless, believe that this year’s Tsh’a b’Av marks not only the end of the sacred temples but, with the withdrawal from Gaza and now the acceptance of the cease-fire, the beginning of the end of Israel itself. Through UNIFIL’s watchful eyes, Hizbullah replaced Fatah as the dominant force in southern Lebanon and then built a series of strategic bunkers under homes, mosques, schools and hospitals in order to wage war against Israel. In one case, UNIFIL soldiers actively participated in the kidnapping by Hizbullah forces of three Israeli soldiers from Israel on October 7, 2000. Then, of course, there is the army of Lebanon, a military that has been molded over the last decade by Syria, a military that is forty percent Shi’ia, a military that has let Iran’s Revolutionary Guard take over its coastal radar system to destroy an Israeli warship, and a military that is seething with hatred toward Israel as a consequence of this last war. Given a choice between shooting a Hizballah force trying to cross into Israel and looking the other way, the Lebanese army will…? Just weeks after Israel left Gaza, Hamas launched some forty missiles into Israel. Years after leaving Lebanon, Israel faces not a rag-tag militia but a well-trained, well-supplied, well-fortified Iranian army, which was built up while UNIFIL was watching. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a man who has castigated Israel for the faux incident at Qana and has remained characteristically silent about Hizbullah raining indiscriminate death on Israeli civilian targets, will be the ultimate arbiter of how the cease-fire is implemented. A vulnerable Israel will find its air superiority threatened by modernized Saudi, Syrian, and Egyptian air forces. Instead of yielding land for the illusion of peace, Israel needs strategic depth and a Hizbullah and Hamas so weakened that their benefactors will find it nearly impossible to resurrect them in the immediate future. Indeed the lesson of this conflict should be equal to the lessons Israel taught Egypt in 1973: Israel is here to stay.

Most of us learned arithmetic in elementary school and didn’t engage in algebraic concepts until middle or high school.Educators throughout the nation have come to the conclusion that if children are to learn algebra with understanding, algebraic reasoning must be an integral part of elementary school mathematics. University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers Thomas Carpenter and Linda Levi along with a core group of elementary school teachers throughout the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) have been involved in this pioneering work of understanding how to include algebraic reasoning in the elementary grades. Dr. Levi has researched the factors that enable children to learn math with understanding and is currently studying how the teaching of mathematics in elementary school can prepare children for success in algebra.

Now to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.Ephesians 3:20-21Hello everyone..I was planning on doing a normal entry today catching up on day-to-day life and whatnot, but then last night…we got some of the most amazing news ever. Dr. James Scott Pendergraft, who owns 5 abortion mills in the state of Florida–including Orlando Women’s Center (if you click on services and then third trimester you will find that they even advertise illegal third trimester abortions–it’s only legal in this state if the mother’s LIFE is at risk, not for fetal abnormalities, etc), the one I’ve been ministering at for a little over a year–is under criminal investigation by the state, and his license to practice medicine in Florida has indeed been suspended. He is charged with performing illegal third trimester abortions and administering drugs to the women illegally. Right now, all five of his abortuaries are closed. The Lord is so magnificent! So many innocent babies have been slaughtered at this doctors” hands; hopefully, he is not allowed to heartlessly murder another baby as long as he lives. I might go down to the mill with my Mom later. There will be media there, and it would be good to have Christians there answering questions, and we also might be able to get more information, if the workers are at the mill despite its being out of business for now. May God be glorified in all this, and work His perfect will! Ill post more as I get it.This happening has been my prayer for the last year..may God forgive me for not trusting that He would accomplish it.Glorying,Mary Jo

My day started just like Friday, at 1:00 pm on the PlayStation stage, where Sybris brought their Chicago noisy neo-psychedelia to the audience (an audience which was too small because old-school poppers Nada Surf were on the nearby Bud Light stage at 12:30 pm). Regardless, Sybris fulfilled every expectation of a live show I had developed since buying their album in the spring (I’ll try to avoid repeating myself after the CD review). Team’s set at 1:30 pm on the Q101 Stage. Skipping past Built to Spill and Particle (I promised to try and keep things exciting), I’ll now talk about the Disco Biscuits, who played at 5 pm on the AMD stage. The crowd at this type of show becomes just as entertaining as the band on stage. The real gem of the festival though was the Flaming Lips, who played at 6:30 pm on the Bud Light stage. I’ve been saying for a year that this band (especially their Soft Bulletin album) is simultaneously beautiful and terrifying. They were on the Adidas stage at 7:30 pm, and were a perfect come down from the previous performance. I was so worn out in fact, that I just sat in the lawn at watched the band on their stage video screen. Darkness came after I got some pizza and beer, and Manu Chao took the Bud Light stage at 8:30 pm.

Shutterfly has shown its proposed IPO terms this morning, and the amount that is indicated is slightly less than the 2 million it listed on June 29 in its up to 2 million to be raised. If you used 5.8 million shares at the high-end of the 5.00 range, you would get a total of 7 million. It is one of the leading online photo service that lets consumers share, store, edit and print digital photos. The California-based company plans backed by Netscape founder Jim Clark plans to offer 5.8 million shares at a range of 3.00 to 5.00 per share. The deal has now a proposed market cap for the company of about 90 million and will trade under the ticker SFLY. J.P.Morgan is the lead underwriter and Piper Jaffray and Jefferies are set to co-manage the deal. What is interesting is that Goldman Sachs is no where to be seen, even though they were on an amended S-1 filing last month and on the June 29 original S-1 filing. That cannot be a coincidence, and this may raise a flag. There could have been some conflict of interest for the reason behind it, but that would be overly optimistic thinking.Goldman Sachs is still listed as a 375 share owner of the company, but that is far too small for a conflict to keep them from participating as that is very far under 1% of the company and they could have forfeited the shares. Jim Clark and entities affiliated with him own 7.1 million shares, which is listed as 40.3% of the company. There is also a significant number of preferred class shares that will convert subject to a 2.00 price and 5.0 million raised. We now have the financial results for the year up to June 30, 2006 and that was not available as of June 29.BALANCE SHEET:The company claims 9.4 million in total liabilities (down from 7.1 million at the end of 2005), with 4.8 million of that being regular short-term obligations and normal costs. Its cash and equivalents were 3.9 million and just over million more in other current assets, but its cash and equivalents carried at the end of 2005 was listed as a much higher 9.153 million. It valued its plant and equipment at 2.5 million, which is almost .8 million higher than at the end of 2005. it also lists a deferred tax asset at 4.5 million, which is also up almost .9 million from the end of 2005.INCOME STATEMENT:The only good news here is that the company is still showing revenue growth. For 2005 we noted that the company posted a 8.9 million in net income, but 4 million of that was from a tax benefit and another 42,000 was from an accounting change. For the first half of 2006 the company stillhas a net loss, although while we said earlier the only good news… it does need to be offered in fairness that the company depends heavily on the last quarter for revenues and income like so many other retail-related plays. For the first 6-months of the year the company posted revenues of 6.5 million (up from 7.2 million the first half of 2005). Unfortunately its operating expenses and investments outpaced the revenue growth. It posted a net loss allocated to shareholders of -.658 million for the first half of 2006, compared toa first half loss of -.29 million in 2005.It really appears as though any IPO player here is going to be banking on a solid end of the year. Its top-line growth is so far being offset by an increase in spending and there are some questionable thoughts with Goldman Sachs all of a sudden not appearing in the deal. From June 29, 2006 on the site HERE: Shuddering After Reading Shutterfly’s IPO Prospectus Shutterfly, one of the leading online photo services, has filed to come public via an IPO. This was one of the first online photo sites, and one of its backers is Jim Clark, co-founder of Netscape. It has filed to raise up to 2M from stock sales, although we’ll have to wait to see how many shares actually get sold and at what price.According to the prospectus Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Piper Jaffray, and Jefferies are underwriting the offering. The company was evaluating its alternatives just yesterday, and now we know what avenue they have chosen to reach their liquidity event. The prospectus says that 17.820 Million shares were outstanding as of March 31, 2006; but that exlcudes 3.198 million shares issuable upon options with exercise prices of .41, 1.755 million shares from the 1999 stock option plan, 1.358 million shares exercisable for the 2006 option plan, 0.116 million and 0.0408 million other shares. For 2005, the company posted revenues of 3.9M and net income of 8.9M, but this was inflated from a tax benefit. Its first quarter 2006 revenues were 6.88M (compared to Q1 2005 of 3.15M) with quarterly net income of -.668M (compared to -83K for Q1 2005). That loss would have been wider had it not been for a tax benefit from income taxes, and that was not available in prior quarters. A tax provision was also directly responsible for 4.06M of the company’s 8.9M net income in 2005.Why is it losing more money? Quite simply it is because costs are up in all major areas and the revenue gains are not off-setting these. Also, it is in the same barrel now with all other tech companies as it has to expense these stock options. The company is highly dependent on seasonality, with 49% of 2005 net revenues coming in the fourth quarter. The company also expects to need much larger capacity that has not yet been built to meet 2007 demands and has estimated 0 million to 5 million for capital expenditures in the second half of 2006 and first part of 2007. It also has dozens of competitors to the tune of Hewlett Packard, Eastman Kodak, Wal-Mart, Target, Yahoo!, AOL, CNET, Google, Walgreens and a couple dozen others in the US alone. After looking through the prospectus, it starts to feel like the entire document is a risk factor. The RISK FACTORS section goes from page 8 through page 26. Companies have to list their perceived risks, but this went on and on. The growth rates for the company are slowing at th etime it has said it needs to rapidly increase cap-ex costs. It didn’t list Seeing the dead or Being visited by the Price of Darkness as risks, but it felt like it was going to. This also listed an unspecified number of shares that would be available for additional sales as immediately after this offering, 45 days after the offering, 90 days after the offering, and 180 days afterthe offering

Bear with me for a second, ok?Today, James Joyner mentioned a post by Thomas Barnett citing a subscriber-only article in a recent issue of The Economist which notes that “the war in Iraq is surprisingly bad news for America’s defence firms.” Barnett wrote:Surprising to the Economist perhaps, but I made this argument with some force in the first chapter of Blueprint for Action. The Pentagon lives to dream up fabled future opponents and then program against that desired foe. In concert, the defense firms live to build those massive and expensive platforms and weapons and communications systems for that desired scenario. You have some nasty and real like Afghanistan and Iraq intrude on that dreamy future, and guess what? Stuff doesn’t get bought. Not surprising whatsoever. Asymmetrical, fourth-generation warfare doesn’t favor the few and the absurdly expensive, but the many and the cheap. James then built upon that post to say that facts seldom change preconceptions and people will go right on believing that we go to war at the behest of defense contractors. Now…I noticed Barnett didn’t provide a link or any quote from the article. Here it is. The first paragraph only talks about the cancellation of the C-17 transport. So I decided to see what others were saying about the various defense firms. After all - with multi-billion dollar destroyers, subs, stealthfighters etc. and a budget that now is roughly equivalent to the whole of the rest of the world, not to mention all those lucrative new deals in Pakistan, India, Saudia and others that the war on terror has made possible - how can Barnett explain away the public perception of record profits and share prices for every major defense firm?Well, he can’t.Between 2001 and 2005, the profits for the 34 largest defense companies have climbed 189 percent. Profits for U.S. corporations as a whole rose 76 percent.Or are those just pesky facts again? Like the doubling of defense firm average CEO pay while they are supposedly hurting this much? Before 9/11, the gap between CEOs of publicly traded companies and army privates was already a galling 190 to 1. Today, it is 308 to 1. The average army private makes 5,000 a year. The average defense CEO makes .7 million. It gets worse.Jan 26, 2006 Lockheed Martin quarterly profits up 53% Profits topped Wall Street estimates as sales rose 2.6 percent to 0.2 billion. Net income was up 68 million, compared with the fourth quarter of 2004 when earnings were 72 million. The company is raising its earnings forecast for this year from a share to .25 and has declared a quarterly stock dividend of 30 cents a share.April 26, 2006 Boeing 1Q earnings up 29 percent to 92MNet income was 92 million, or 88 cents per share, up from 35 million, or 66 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue climbed to 4.3 billion from 2.7 billion, up 12 percent although below the 4.5 billion expected by analysts. The defense units operating earnings declined 4 percent and revenues were down 6 percent, leaving it just ahead of the commercial airplane division at $7.2 billion. The company said operating margins for the Integrated Defense Systems division increased by 11 percent, driven by gains in military aircraft programs such as the C-17, F/A-18 and Rotorcraft. Those are the big two and both are reporting making big bucks from big-ticket military items.Northrop Grumman showed an increase 3.6% in profits from 2004 to 2005, Raytheon a 5.8% increase, United Technologies 10% and General Dynamics 7.22%. (All data from Fortune magazine)Accross the pond, BAe are also showing increasing profits.BAE said net profit for the 12 months ended Dec. 31 was 553 million pounds ($969 million), up from 2 million pounds in the previous year. Revenue rose to 11.02 billion pounds ($19 billion) from 8.82 billion pounds.Finance Director George Rose said earnings at the companys programs unit were driven higher by the Eurofighter military jet program as deliveries ramped up to European nations.Last year, 37 Eurofighters were delivered to air forces in Britain, Italy, Spain and Germany. India did not face the war directly though many of its soldiers participated in WWII and won great victories in different parts of the world. Not only do we not relate ourselves to this war, we do not even talk about our soldier’s achievements in this war. During WWII, our nationalist leaders coming from all ideologies (who were fighting for Independence) were not keen on supporting British overtly though many Indian soldiers recruited themselves into the war – Indian soldiers player a pivotal role in WWII, and we do not even talk about it! Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (who should be pardoned for his naiveté) chose to support this invading Japanese Army, renowned for its war crimes and occupation brutalities (which included rape of Manchuria and Indo-China), while the Indian soldiers were fighting this invading army on the Indian border. As a conscious decision, Indian people and its government chose to highlight the not-so-grand achievements of INA and Subhas Chandra Bose while meticulously ignoring the momentous achievements of Indian soldiers in WWII. Lacking in formal exposure and education to events of WWII, many Indians do not know the exact crimes committed by Nazis, and even if they do, they completely ignore it the way they desensitize themselves to all the miseries of India- roadside begging kids, colossal garbage piling up next to their home, dying people from malnutrion, etc. I have not seen this much fascination and admiration for Adolf Hitler in any other community, culture or society. I believe that there is a great correlation between the groups who admire Adolf Hitler, the groups who hate or think low of Muslims, and those who are against reservations. The prevailing feeling is that devout and typical Muslims are somehow not easy to get along. On the other extreme are people who think that most of the evils of Indian society exist because of Muslims (very synonymous to how Nazis blamed certain sections of people for all evils of their society). Most moderate Hindus may not harbor much ill-will but they are fine as long as they see a Muslim as a grocer, a laborer, or auto-driver, but not in their regular life. The Muslims go to different kind of schools and somehow are not part of the mainstream. If we do not tackle these issues consciously as a society, we will be forced into another surgical procedure or a civil war- far bloodier than any thing we have experienced in our history.Update: (22 Dec 2006)An article, Hitler the trendy tyrant in India, says- In Gujarat, textbooks have praised Hitler’s leadership abilities, fascism and the Nazi movement. The textbooks have been changed slightly this year but still barely mention the Holocaust.Update: (29 Sep 2006)Subhas Bose RevisitedUpdate: (10 Sep 2006) The Return of Hitler As Hero: The World Through Cracked Lenses A recent article in the Times of India, Mumbai reported on a poll of students from India’s premier academic institutions about the country’s political future.

An Open Collaborative Blog: The Blog is intended to add a much needed new dimension to our group work toolset under the New Mobility Agenda, by providing a broader forum for posting ideas and proposals which stretches beyond our usual email messages both in terms of length, hopefully compositional effort on the authors part, and, we would like to think, their eventual outreach and impact. Unlike the messages which are subject to (we hope light and useful) moderation, blog items posted by our invited colleagues will remain untouched unedited) Internal organization: Opening page displays upper right (a) ten most recent entries. But please consult these Guidelines before your first posting Until you are conversant with the entry routines here (see below) we suggest you send it to any of our Contributors/Editors via email and we can post as per your instructions. Common knowledge base: it is our hope that entries here will be made by people who have had a chance to develop a more or less common, or at least a well researched base of information and insight on sustainable transportation, as well as on the particular approach being taken by the New Mobility Agenda. The hallmark here is variety, open expression, and creative dissonance.) Wikipedia as a workpad: To be quite sure on that, may we ask that you spend a few minutes with the two draft entries on the Wikipedia, in which we have made an effort to spell out this common base: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_transportation and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mobility_Agenda. So if the thrust of the entry is not within this time frame or less, it does not belong here. Link Option: Note that at the top of the entry form is place for both the item title and a link.

A larger corporal or more than one corporal may be required for concelebrations and other solemn celebrations. Before use, the corporal is usually left on top of the chalice and, while no longer obligatory, it may be kept in a flat, square case called a burse. Before the present reform, hosts were placed directly upon the corporal and although this is rarely the case today, as our reader points out, it may gather any fragments that fall from the host during the celebration although these mostly fall into either the ciborium or chalice. The GIRM mentions the corporal in several places, first of all in describing the preparation of the gifts, in No. Other indications require that a chalice or ciborium should be placed on a corporal whenever it is left on the altar or credence table for purification. With respect to our reader’s queries, it would appear that in her parish they follow the bad habit of leaving the corporal unfolded upon the altar between Masses and even for days on end. The norms require that the corporal be unfolded during the presentation of gifts and properly folded again after Communion. All the same, extra corporals may be placed on the altar before especially solemn Masses in which more sacred vessels are used than can fit on the corporal directly in front of the priest. The GIRM does not require a new corporal for each Mass, it is sufficient for the corporal to be opened and folded with due care to avoid any mishaps. Afterward, the corporal may be washed in a normal fashion.* * *Follow-up: When Words Over the Host Are RepeatedAfter our piece on repeating the words of consecration (July 3), some related questions came to light.A reader from Los Angeles asked: "Our priest took the chalice in his hands and said the text of consecration of bread.

Well, I stand three days from turning 22 and I suppose another chapter of my life has been completed. Looking back, it is easy to see the way God has transformed my life in the past 21 years. It’s time to put aside the childish ways and move on to bigger and better things, though I have had a blessed life thus far.I could not have asked to be born into a better family than I have. If I only knew that day was an inauguration into a life of mission rather than baptism being the end goal of faith, I might have walked differently through my teenage years, but I appreciate the process and journey as much or more than the destination. I only wish I would have developed spiritual disciplines in those early years that might have made my current devotional life that much better. Why was I so sectarian about a faith that did not matter enough to implement in my daily life? Dating her was only a dream in my mind, but God somehow brought two totally different people with totally different agendas into a relationship that would one day foster great faith, spirituality and deep love in a marital relationship. I can only wait to see my perspective 50 years from now when she has mothered a family, nurtured a preaching husband and lived a life of faithfulness. I want to thank Holly’s parents for working in Holly’s life to form her into a deep woman of faith that is loyally devoted to me as I am to her. Each of you has been a servant of God sent to me in order to confirm his call on my life.Ultimately, I thank God for the work he has done in me because of Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit. However, for the first time in my life and I can say I am content in myself and in my life.
